Guest Post by Pickles

Pickles

I think Ringo has finally left the nest box for good. Boy, it took a long time for him to leave. But I don't have the heart to kick him down to the floor if he's not ready. Even if he is barely a squeaker anymore. It's been kinda nice having him around and Charley didn't seem to mind. But with two more on they way ready to hatch any day, there wasn't a chance for Ringo to get in the nest bowl anyway. Time to find his own way.

Ollie and Uma upstairs have been sitting their eggs a loooonnng time. I'm thinking those eggs were switched on them. They are kinda daft. Don't think I'd let them reproduce either if I had a choice. Those kids would be sliding on in here before you knew it and they wouldn't miss 'em. They act like its a bother keeping them fed. And they must know I'm a sucker for young ins. I take good care of them. Probably why no one messes with my eggs. Besides, not much else to do now that we are on lock down. One dang bird doesn't make it home and we all have to suffer. Wonder where he went off to anyway? The people think that maybe a hawk or hunter got him. I think that he went on down south with the geese. These nor'easters are for the birds.

Anyway here comes Charley. His turn to sit these eggs. I'm gonna go get some fresh air. Fly at ya later!

1st Annual OBX Walk Against Addiction

Saturday, September 25 · 9:00am - 11:30am
First Flight High School
Registration begins at 9am. Walk begins at 10am.

Registration - $10 per person - children under 12 years of age are free.
Donations can also be made to OBX Walk Against Addiction.

We'll be there with our doves! There will be a release before the walk.

There will be professionals in the fields of addiction, treatment facilities and support groups to pass out information and answer questions. They include Dare County Coalition Against Substance Abuse, New Horizons, Two Dreams Outer Banks, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Joanne Hummbers of Professional Counseling Services, Footprints in Recovery, AL-ANON and Oxford House.

"No one is ashamed to have cancer, heart disease or any other type of illness and they seek help immediately. But I believe there is still a stigma attached to the disease of addiction and I am hopeful that my walk will help take some of that away so people reach out for treatment and hope to change their lives", said Brenda Thacker, Dare County resident who has spearheaded this special event.

Proceeds raised from this event will benefit "The Awareness That Addiction is a Disease Fund" providing education and scholarships for those in need of treatment.

9/11

Two dove releases in the community today in memory of 9/11:

12pm Kitty Hawk Fire Department - White doves released as of a nationwide memorial in which over 3,000 white doves have been pledged to be released simultaneously in memory of all those who paid the ultimate price in the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

6:00 -6:30pm ‎9/11 Remembrance, Nags Head at St. Andrews by the Sea Chapel. Local fire departments will be on hand with their apparatus. White Doves will be released outside before the service starts in the chapel.

My sister found this poem - she'll be reading it at the noon release at the KHFD.

9/11

9-11, emergency some will say,
but no one will forget that September day.

When the strongest people and the bravest souls
risked their lives to go below.

The crashing towers falling down
spreading sadness all around.

We felt bravery for those who knew the cost,
and we felt sadness for all the ones we lost.

But out of the rubble rose wings of Hope
maybe someday we all will cope.

But until that day we all will grieve
and deal with a memory that will never leave.

For our answers we look to the heavens
and deal with the pain of September 11th.

New Website, New Eggs!

Our new website has been up for a couple of weeks, and I have been wanting to acknowledge the designer, Andrea White, of Sykesville Design, for creating a beautiful site. I've worked with Andrea for several years and I have always appreciated her style and approach. When it came to be my turn to work directly with her, she didn't disappoint and we've had great comments on the site. She went above and beyond to get it launched and to follow up with additional advice even when her job was done.

In other news, I'm excited to report that there are 4 new eggs in the loft today, bringing the total to 6. The birds think it's Spring and are nesting while we are nesting in this rainy January day in the house by the fire. Four new birds arrived from Minneapolis today so it must surely feel like Spring to them!

Business Cards and Logo

Barb at Coastal Impressions designed our logo and business cards. We couldn't be happier with the end results - she incorporated the beachy sand and sea glass colors we were looking for while producing a whimsical yet professional look. And how cute are those birds. Besides all that she is the best neighbor and a Steeler girl - what more can you ask for!!!
